Prince William and Kate Middleton borrowed from an extensive fleet of cars, new and old, to get them to and from their wedding ceremony. Kate accompanied her new husband from Westminster Abbey in the same horse-drawn carriage that Prince Charles and Princess Diana used after their 1981 nuptials. William then took the wheel of a 1969 Aston Martin DB6 Volante.
But what could the 'average' newlywed couple looking to emulate the royals choose? Here are the ultimate wedding chariots:
The 'budget' option for a classy wedding is the current Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The big Merc might have a whiff of the far more humble C-Class, but from the inside, on the back seats in particular, it is a million miles away. With a silky ride and an eerie sense of quiet, the S-Class is a great place in which to calm those royal pre-wedding jitters

The Arnage R is the basis of the Bentley State Limousine, used to get Princes William and Harry to last weekend's ceremony. The Queen was gifted two in 2002, to mark her Golden Jubilee. It's not the prettiest Bentley ever made, but it was the company's top of the line motor between 1998 and 2009, with a greater air of tradition and sophistication than the football-tastic Continental GT. Recently replaced by the equally un-pretty Mulsanne.

As one of the most expensive production cars on sale in the world today, a Phantom is about as lavish as the modern wedding car gets. However, it is as British as the MINI, which is also in fact German (both companies are owned by BMW). A favourite among rappers and celebrity pop moguls alike, it's perhaps the single most impressive, imposing and downright awesome saloon ever made. How they manage to make a 6.75-litre V12 engine so quiet is beyond us.

Yet another British car uprooted from England's green and pleasant land and sent to Germany (Bentley is owned by Volkswagen), the Flying Spur is basically a four-door version of the Continental GT. It can't match the Phantom or the Mulsanne for impact, but thanks to the English Premier League the Flying Spur is probably the most recognisable rich man's family saloon in the country.
Nothing quite has the same wedding day impact as rocking up to the church in a pristine white Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow. The quintessential Roller, it was built from 1965 to re-establish the British company as maker of the finest cars in the world. It worked, and reportedly is still the most prolific Rolls-Royce model ever made. It has a timeless quality and taste that the others don't, and that's why it's our ultimate wedding car.
